Despite metal music becoming mainstream entertainment, it isn’t the most child-friendly from most parents’ view. The controversial lyrics, unconventional lifestyle, and hedonistic theme gave the genre some bad press. These are some of the heavy metal bands that had parents clutching their pearls in the 1980s.

Slayer

Trash metal band Slayer has cemented its place as one of the most influential bands in the subgenre. Songs like “Raining Blood” and “Angel of Death” contribute to why they’re commercially successful. However, the latter has unconventional album art and unsettling lyrics that practically idolize physician Josef Mengele.

W.A.S.P

American band W.A.S.P. is one of the most commercially successful metal bands, with 12 million albums sold. While many musicians are cautious with their initial releases, W.A.S.P. did the opposite with their song “Animal,” which was disturbing enough for the Parents Music Resource Center to include in their ‘filthy fifteen’ list.

Iron Maiden

English band Iron Maiden is well known for its music. It is one of the few bands with a personal mascot named “Eddie the Head,” which was zombie-like and appeared in violent scenes. There was also controversy over their album “The Number of the Beast,” which some felt promoted Satanism.

Judas Priest

British band Judas Priest has enjoyed commercial success, selling over 50 million albums. However, it hasn’t been without controversy because their lyrics contain undertones of vengeance and rebellion. Most notably, they faced a lawsuit from plaintiffs who felt their music contained dangerous subliminal messages.

Mercyful Fate

Danish metal band Mercyful Fate has been active since 1981. While they have enjoyed the adoration of fans, others don’t want them around. The band’s lead singer, King Diamond, is known for applying paint resembling blood, while songs like “Into the Coven” have been criticized for their occultic theme.
