5 Actors Who Missed Out on Iconic Roles

Over the years, several unforgettable characters from movies and TV series remain fan favorites. But what if we told you that other actors were originally slated to play those parts? We review five actors who missed out on iconic roles, why they did, and the replacement actors.
Tom Selleck – Indiana Jones

Tom Selleck was originally cast as Indiana Jones in the eponymous movie franchise. However, contractual obligations to the studio behind the Magnum P.I. TV series barred Selleck from taking additional roles. Harrison Ford would go on to play Indiana Jones, earning over $100 in five movies for the franchise.
Emily Blunt – Black Widow

Another Hollywood star who turned down a part because of a schedule conflict was Emily Blunt. When Marvel cast her to play Black Widow in “Iron Man 2,” she was shooting for Gulliver’s Travels. The gig went to Scarlett Johansson, who has earned around $60 million reprising the role.
John Travolta – Forrest Gump

American actor Tom Hanks starred in “Forrest Gump,” winning several awards for his part, including an Academy Award. The movie also earned him over $60 million. However, most people don’t know that John Travolta was the first choice but declined the role because he didn’t connect with the material.
Dougray Scott – Wolverine (X-Men)

Dougray Scott was originally cast as Wolverine, but scheduling conflicts with “Mission: Impossible 2” meant he couldn’t take the job. Hugh Jackman got the role in his place and has defined the character for decades in the X-Men franchise. Jackman has received several awards and around $100 million playing Wolverine.
Molly Ringwald – Vivian Ward (Pretty Woman)

Molly Ringwald once said she rejects certain acting jobs because she prefers being a good role model. So, it wasn’t shocking when she turned down the controversial role of Vivian Ward in “Pretty Woman.” Julia Roberts instead got the gig and earned an Oscar nomination for her performance.
